Ryan Leaf arrested on battery charges

Former Chargers #2 overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, QB Ryan Leaf was arrested Friday on misdemeanor domestic battery charges. He was released on $5,000 bail.

Details of what led to the arrest are unclear.

What we do know is what comes from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department website. Leafe was booked on violation of penal code 243 (E)(1). Which states that it is, “battery is committed against a spouse, a person with whom the defendant is cohabiting, a person who is the parent of the defendant’s child, former spouse, fiancé, or fiancée, or a person with whom the defendant currently has, or has previously had, a dating or engagement relationship.”

It’s punishable by up to a year imprisonment, and/or a $2,000 fine. If the sentence is suspended, or probation is granted, the individual must undergo at least a year of batterer’s treatment.

Another aspect pf this charge is that under the California statute, physical violence does not have to have occurred. Simple use of force or violence is all that needs to happen. This can be a threat, it can be loud yelling, it can also a simple disagreement, in which the victim felt her safety was threatened.

Since we do not know the details, it is important to consider all possibilities, and not pass judgment just yet. His next court date, according to the site, is September 25th.

There was nothing in the report of drug use, or the presence of drugs during the incident or the arrest.

We all know Ryan Leaf’s history and recovery. We hope he can continue being an ambassador for those suffering from addiction. However, he must first face any consequences for these actions.
